Betty Boop: The Old Man Of The Mountain (1933, Max Fleischer) [Mar. 25th, 2015|11:54 pm]
Classic Cartoons

The Old Man of the Mountain was the third and last of the Fleischer cartoons pairing Betty Boop and Cab Calloway; the others are Minnie the Moocher and Snow-White. As in the other two cartoons, film footage of Cab Calloway was rotoscoped, or traced into animation, to provide the dance steps for the Old Man during his duet of "You've Got to Hi-De-Hi".

The dialogue between Betty and the Old Man ("Whatcha gonna do now?" "Gonna do the best I can!") is mirrored almost exactly in a scene between Santa Claus and Oogie Boogie in the 1993 film The Nightmare Before Christmas. The scene also features music very similar to Calloway's "Minnie the Moocher" and dance steps close to Calloway's own

Popeye the Sailor Meets Sindbad the Sailor, 1936 (Max Fleischer/Paramount) [Mar. 3rd, 2015|12:43 am]

Perhaps the best cartoon that Max Fleischer ever produced. This full color two-reel epic features Popeye and Sindbad (played by Bluto) deciding once and for all which of them is "the most remarkable, extraordinary fellow". This is one of the reasons why the 1930's were the best time for cartoons ever.

This cartoon redefines "awesome". Without a doubt, this is Superman's finest moment in the 1940's theatrical series. Watch and enjoy some of the best animation ever, brought to you by the Max Fleischer Studio, the same people who brought you the best Popeye cartoons ever.

This cartoon seems to have been inspired by the 1937 Max Fleischer short "Fowl Play".

Rough On Rats (1933, Van Beuren) [Oct. 10th, 2014|07:31 am]

This short starts out pretty cutesy, until one of the kittens has a run in with a fairly nasty rat who tries to run the poor kitty through a bologna slicer! Fear not, the kitties get their revenge. The moral of this story is "Don't mess with these kittens! They'll mess you up!"
